Director Tomino hinting spoilers? Find out in our "Gundam Reconguista in G" special screening event report!
Plus, a visit to Tower Records and Animate!
A special screening of Gundam Reconguista in G was held at Shinjuku Piccadilly in Tokyo on December 28th.
Four key episodes from the first broadcast cours were screened, followed by an advance premiere of episode 15. A discussion panel was also held, featuring director Yoshiyuki Tomino, Mark Ishii (voice of Bellri), Yu Shimamura (voice of Aida), Takuya Sato (voice of Mask), and Ryota Osaka (voice of Klim).
At the talk show, held in Theater 1 of Shinjuku Piccadilly, Mr. Sato made his appearance wearing the "Mask's Mask" that was also given to attendees. Coming out on stage in the mask, with Mask's hairstyle, and striking his famous pose was enough to get the crowd excited.
At the time of the screening, Gundam Reconguista in G had just wrapped up its first broadcast cours. Mr. Ishii commented, looking back, "When I came to the premiere here at Shinjuku Piccadilly, I was nothing but nervous, but now I'm very happy I took the role and look forward to taking on each new episode."
Asked, jokingly, by series producer Ogata "How the Princess was", Ms. Shimamura replied, "As much of a handful as ever. (laughing) With so much happening in each episode, I just try to go with the flow." Mr. Sato, speaking about his own character, mentioned "With so many new characters and mobile suits appearing each week, Mask's unshaken focus on what's in front of him definitely marks him as someone who marches to the pace of his own drum."
As for Mr. Osaka, who was making his first panel appearance, he noted that this was "[His] first time playing a character with such self-confidence, which makes it a learning experience." Commenting on Klim's laugh during his first appearance, he reminisced that "When trying out for the role, I had used a loud, almost aristocratic laugh, but during actual recording it came out excited and shrill, which made the production staff start laughing too."
Turning to director Tomino, protests of "I'm not done with my work! I don't have time to waste here!" were soon followed with "... but hearing the cast in-person again may change what will happen, so I'm glad I came."
Other tidbits dropped in quick succession, much to Mr. Ogata's chagrin, were "I'm really focused on Mask's scenes in episode 25", "Aida gets her 2 seconds of fame in episode 25", and "After incorporating all of Yasuda's ideas, I was worried that the G-Self was pretty much invincible, but I've found a solution and I hope you're all looking forward to the final episode".
However, he also mentioned: "I'd like to end G-Reco on a happy note. Love, adventure, and profound emotion all await in the end."
Mr. Ogata asked the cast how their friends and family had responded to G-Reco, and Mr. Ishii replied: "My father's a huge Gundam fan, and even after we moved to Japan from the Philippines he decorated our living room with Gunpla. When I told him I was cast in G-Reco, he didn't say anything but 'Oh.', but the next time I visited him I noticed a G-Self, and then he painted it, and then another kit... I kind of wish he'd straight-up tell me face-to-face, but now I definitely know he appreciates my work."
Shimamura mentioned her brother saying "There had better be some passion in your lines."
Last but not least, after a photo with the crowd all in Mask's mask, everyone was asked for one final comment:
Ryota Osaka
"This was my first event, and it was fun looking back at the past cours. There's still a lot more to come, and I hope you're there for all of it!"
Takuya Sato
"I'm as curious about what will happen as all of you are. I've got plenty of energy for next year, and I hope you're there to hear it!"
Yu Shimamura
"I'm recharged with the 'genki no G'' and ready to face 2015 refreshed. Thanks for your support in the coming year!"
Mark Ishii
"Recording will be over soon, but I'm still giving it my all, so look forward to what's coming. Don't miss "Reconradio in G" either!"
Yoshiyuki Tomino
"I believe this past cours has been the fastest-paced I've ever written, and I'd like it to stand as an example of what you can do in anime or in film. Of course, this means some astonishing twists, but I have it on very good authority that elementary schoolchildren can understand it quite well, so perhaps you adults can try harder too."
Before the event, the panelists also visited the Tower Records and Animate locations in Shinjuku.
Along with handing out signed shikishi, they left their signatures on Tower Records' "NO ANIME, NO LIFE. × Gundam Reconguista in G" and Animate's " Gundam Reconguista in G" and other Gundam sections—check them out the next time you're shopping!
